Rise Above was honored to collaborate with the Native American Fatherhood & Families Association (NAFFA), who hosted us in their community for a powerful two-day GONA (Gathering of Native Americans) event in Mesa, Arizona. From February 27th–28th, Native youth ages 13–18 came together from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM each day to connect, grow, and find the champion within themselves.
Throughout the event, the gym was full of energy as youth took part in basketball drills and skill-building sessions led by the Rise Above Coaching staff. These sessions weren’t just about improving on the court—they focused on discipline, teamwork, and building confidence that carries into everyday life.
What made the event especially meaningful was the balance between sport and culture. Youth participated in a talking circle where they were able to share openly and support one another in a safe space. The Hoopa dance brought powerful cultural energy, reinforcing identity, pride, and connection to tradition.

We were also grateful to have special guests who helped bring the experience to life. The Phoenix Suns mascot added excitement and fun, while DJ Shawn Martinez—Senior Director of Live Presentation for the Phoenix Suns and a proud member of the Navajo Nation—kept the energy high and served as a strong example of representation in professional spaces.
This event was made even more impactful with the presence of NAFFA founder Albert Pooley, who established the organization in 2002. With over 40 years of experience as a tribal consultant, Pooley has dedicated his work to strengthening Native families through culturally grounded education, with a focus on fatherhood and motherhood. His leadership and vision continue to create spaces like this for youth and families to thrive.
Rise Above Co-Founder Jaci McCormack helped lead the vision for the two days, bringing together coaches, partners, and community to create an environment where youth felt supported, empowered, and seen.
By the end of the event, the impact was clear. Youth walked away with new skills, stronger connections, and a deeper belief in who they are and what they’re capable of. We’re grateful to NAFFA for welcoming us into their community and look forward to continuing this important work together.
